To see the Native VLAN in action on a live trunk port, check out this video.
My internal VLAN's do start at 2. However I just learned that at that setting VLAN's 2-33 are reserved by the SonicWALL. X4 had VLAN's 20 and 30 so that is where the conflict was. If there are any VLAN's configured on the FW that fall between 2 and 33, the switch will not provision. Perhaps this should be documented in your KB.

I would like to use a dead vLAN as the native/untagged vLAN on trunk feeds as a security best practice. The trunk feed is between a Cisco and Aruba switch. On Cisco switch, the vLAN is left out of the vLAN database and frames won't get forwarded, making it "dead". The dead vLAN is native on the Cisco trunk interface.

I was able to figure this out. I do indeed need to configure an uplink VLAN (or use the default vlan) and assign it to the uplink port like so: set interfaces ge-0/0/23 native-vlan-id 1000 set interfaces ge-0/0/23 unit 0 family ethernet-switching vlan members 1000.
